Joseph Cunane, businessman, entrepreneur, mentor, husband, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and distinguished gentleman ascended into heaven on his 74th birthday surrounded by his family at his cherished home in Newark, DE after a brief illness.

Joseph was born in Wilmington, DE and attended Newark High School. After working numerous jobs starting at age 12, he and his lifelong partner and wife, Nona, founded Guardian Companies in 1976 where he continued to work for the rest of his life.

Joseph was predeceased by his father Joseph Cunane, his mother Mildred Smith, and his step father Alden Smith. He is survived by brothers Jimmy, Tommy, and Bobby, wife Nona, daughters Dawn Cunane (Jim), Nona Van Deusen (Herb), and Christine Cunane, son Joseph, 13 grandchildren (Jacob, Grace, Noah, Collin, Celia, Lilly, Alden, Ava, Maci, Stalena, Holland, Herbie, and Lincoln), and many dear friends that he also considered his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 28, 2016 at 12 Noon at Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Road Newark, DE. Friends and family may call on from 10 AM to 12 Noon at Holy Family Church. The burial service will immediately follow at All Saints Cemetery. Afterwards, at 4PM, a celebration of his life will be held at Christiana Fire Company Memorial Hall, 2 E. Main St., Christiana, DE. 19702

The family requests that you wear something blue in honor of Guardian, the company he loved.
