Love Emblem

Thelma Louise Antal, 90, of Bear, Delaware passed away early in the morning of March 31st, 2016.

Thelma graduated Claymont High School in 1943. She was a cheerleader and especially enjoyed the football and basketball games. Her favorite classes in high school were typing, bookkeeping, and anything related to becoming a secretary. She also enjoyed singing and she sang on every occasion that presented itself.
One of her favorite past times was dancing to the big band sounds of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.

She was widowed in 1968 at the age of 43, after which she went back to work at Sun Oil Company's Research and Development Laboratory in Marcus Hook, where she started as a part-time typist in the secretarial pool. Within a year she was working as a personal secretary for three of the laboratory's executives, and eventually for the head of R&D. In 1978, she was promoted to executive secretary for the vice president of marketing at Sun's Philadelphia headquarters, where she worked until retiring in March of 1983.

After her retirement Thelma enrolled in what was then called The University of Delaware's Academy of Life Long Learning, which she attended from 1985 to 2005. A favorite course there was the Travel Class, which enabled her to travel extensively in the U.S. and the world. She also taught two courses at the Academy. The first was 'Yesterday for Tomorrow,' a writing class where members would recount their life experiences to pass on to the next generation. The second was on a subject about which she felt very strongly, 'Native American History, Society, and Customs'. She co-taught this class for seven years with Bruce Morrissey, formerly with the Legal departments of DuPont and the University of Delaware, and Chloris Lowe, former President of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin. She often remarked that teaching this class was one of the most fulfilling things she had ever done.

Thelma is predeceased by her father James in June of 1966, by her husband Paul in November 1968, and her mother Lulu in June of 1995. Mrs. Antal is survived by her two sons Jeffery in Delaware and Gregory in California.

A visitation to remember Thelma will be held on Tuesday April 5th, 2016 at 11 A.M. at "Beeson Chapel", Brandywine Valley Funeral Care, 412 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington DE 19809. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Move America Forward, 8795 Folsom Blvd., Ste. 103, Sacramento, CA 95826 or Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Ste. 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
